Volcán de Fuego Erupts in Guatemala, Triggering Evacuations and Dangerous Ashfall

GUATEMALA — One of Central America’s most active volcanoes has erupted once again, sending towering columns of ash into the sky, producing dangerous pyroclastic flows, and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate communities surrounding Volcán de Fuego.
Guatemala’s disaster management agency has been closely monitoring the eruption, which intensified this week with powerful explosions ejecting volcanic ash several miles into the atmosphere. The eruption prompted emergency evacuations from numerous villages on the volcano’s slopes as authorities warned of rapidly changing conditions.
Thousands Evacuated
Officials report that approximately 1,700 residents from at least 18 communities were evacuated or moved into temporary shelters as volcanic activity increased. Emergency crews remain on alert while monitoring the volcano around the clock.
Although eruptive activity has begun to fluctuate, authorities continue to warn residents that conditions can change with little notice.
Pyroclastic Flows Pose Greatest Threat
The eruption has generated pyroclastic flows—fast-moving avalanches of scorching volcanic gas, ash, and rock capable of reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph (160 km/h) with temperatures above 1,000°F (540°C).
These deadly flows have descended several ravines surrounding the volcano, making nearby areas extremely hazardous.
Emergency officials have urged residents and tourists to stay well away from drainage channels and valleys extending from the volcano.
Ashfall Spreads Across Southern Guatemala
Ash from the eruption has fallen across numerous communities southwest of Guatemala City, reducing visibility and affecting air quality.
Authorities temporarily closed sections of National Route 14, one of the region’s primary highways, while schools in several communities suspended classes due to the volcanic ash.
Air travel has also been monitored as volcanic ash can pose a serious hazard to aircraft engines.
Rain Could Trigger Dangerous Lahars
Forecasters are also watching for heavy rainfall near the volcano.
When rain mixes with loose volcanic ash and debris, it can create lahars—fast-moving volcanic mudflows capable of sweeping away vehicles, bridges, and homes many miles downstream.
Even after eruptive activity decreases, lahars remain one of the most dangerous hazards during Guatemala’s rainy season.

The volcano experiences frequent eruptions, but its most devastating modern event occurred in June 2018, when powerful pyroclastic flows buried communities, killing hundreds of people and becoming one of Guatemala’s deadliest natural disasters.
