🌏 Western Pacific Tropics Update β€” August 19, 2026

The Western Pacific is becoming active again, with Tropical Storm Saudel and Tropical Depression 17W being monitored, while the Philippines is also dealing with Tropical Depression Neneng and enhanced southwest monsoon rainfall.

πŸŒ€ Tropical Storm Saudel

Saudel (18W/2618) is currently the main named storm in the western Pacific. The Japan Meteorological Agency upgraded the system to a tropical storm on August 19. (Wikipedia)

PAGASA reported Saudel well east of the Philippines, with maximum sustained winds around 75 km/h (47 mph) and gusts to 90 km/h (56 mph). The storm was moving very little at the time of the latest report. (GMA Network)

For now, Saudel is not an immediate threat to the Philippines, but its eventual movement and intensity will need to be watched closely.

πŸŒ€ Tropical Depression 17W

Another system, Tropical Depression 17W, is strengthening over the Federated States of Micronesia. The National Weather Service in Guam says the depression could reach tropical-storm strength late Wednesday and potentially become a typhoon by Friday. (NMI News Service – V2)

Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for several islands, including Fananu, Ulul, Chuuk, Losap and Lukunor, with heavy rain, gusty winds and dangerous seas expected. (NMI News Service – V2)

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ Tropical Depression Neneng

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Neneng is located east of northern Luzon and is moving generally northwestward toward Taiwan. PAGASA says it could pass close to or make landfall over northern Taiwan Thursday evening or early Friday. (GMA Network)

Neneng is also contributing to a complicated weather pattern across the Philippines, where the southwest monsoon (Habagat) is producing periods of heavy rain and flooding.

πŸ”Ž Western Pacific outlook

The basin bears watching over the next several days as Saudel and 17W evolve at the same time. The combination of warm ocean water, favorable atmospheric conditions and an active monsoon pattern could support additional tropical development.

Bottom line: 🟠 The Western Pacific is active and deserves close monitoring. Saudel is the current named storm, while 17W has the potential to become the next significant typhoon threat later this week.
