A tropical cyclone is a rotating storm system that forms over warm tropical oceans. Although the name changes depending on where the storm forms, the science behind these powerful systems is essentially the same.

A tropical disturbance is an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms that persists for at least 24 hours. Most tropical disturbances never strengthen, but a small percentage eventually develop into tropical depressions.

A tropical wave is a trough of low pressure that travels westward through the tropics. These waves often emerge from Africa and are responsible for many Atlantic hurricanes.

Once a tropical system develops a closed circulation with sustained winds below 39 mph (63 km/h), it becomes a tropical depression.

Characteristics include:

  • Organized circulation

At 39 mph (63 km/h), the system receives an official name.

A hurricane forms once sustained winds reach 74 mph (119 km/h).
