A rapidly intensifying El Niño is pushing the world’s oceans to record warmth and tilting the odds toward 2026 finishing among the two or three hottest years ever measured, even as a brutal European summer of heat, wildfire and drought has already claimed thousands of lives and forced emergency shutdowns at nuclear power plants along the Danube. This week’s Global Climate Pulse rounds up the state of the planet’s major climate indicators, from the tropical Pacific to the shrinking edges of Arctic sea ice.
El Niño / La Niña Update
The Pacific remains locked in a strengthening El Niño. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center placed the event in “El Niño Advisory” status in its July 9 diagnostic discussion, with the Niño 3.4 index — the benchmark measure of equatorial Pacific warmth — running around +1.2°C to +1.5°C in the latest weekly readings, and the Niño 1+2 region near the South American coast running far hotter, at roughly +2.7°C to +3.2°C. An August 4 NOAA update raised the odds of a “very strong” El Niño (Relative Oceanic Niño Index of 2°C or higher) during October–December 2026 to 81 percent, with peak strength now expected around November 2026 and a 97 percent chance the event persists into early spring 2027. Multimodel guidance from the World Meteorological Organization projects the Niño 3.4 anomaly climbing further, to roughly 2.7°C in August, 3.1°C in September and 3.4°C in October. NOAA’s outlook tied to the event favors above-normal temperatures across most land areas north of 60°S — including Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Australia — along with wetter conditions over the central and eastern equatorial Pacific and drier patterns forecast for India, Australia and southern Central America.
Ocean Temperatures
The world’s oceans have been running hot for months, and June set a new global record. The Copernicus Marine Service measured a global sea surface temperature of 21.0°C on June 21, 2026 — about 0.1°C above the prior records set in 2023 and 2024 — while the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, using a different methodology, separately recorded 20.86°C, edging out its own previous record of 20.83°C by 0.01°C. By late June, roughly 82 percent of the global ocean was experiencing marine heatwave conditions, the second-largest such extent on record behind only 2024’s approximately 83 percent. Copernicus data show extra-polar sea surface temperatures (60°S–60°N) have run 0.35–0.73°C above the long-term average for three straight years, with the deepest anomalies — in excess of 1.5°C above normal — concentrated across the North and equatorial Pacific and the North Atlantic, consistent with the developing El Niño.
Arctic Sea Ice
Arctic sea ice continues to track well below its late-20th-century baseline, though this year’s specific extremes were not record-setting in either direction. The U.S. National Ice Center reported the 2026 winter maximum reached 14.53 million square kilometers around March 6–8 — close to the 20-year average maximum date of March 9, but the second-lowest winter maximum recorded since consistent tracking began in 2006. The preceding summer’s minimum, reached September 21–23, 2025, measured 4.86 million square kilometers, the fifth-highest minimum extent since 2006 and the third-latest date on record for the annual low point, arriving about five days after the typical mid-September minimum. Global Temperature Trends
July 2026 tied July 2024 as the hottest July in NOAA’s 176-year global record, with the agency measuring the planet’s temperature 2.12°F above the 20th-century average. A parallel analysis from the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service put July 2026 essentially tied with 2024 for second place, narrowly behind July 2023. In the contiguous United States, July 2026 was the hottest month in 90 years, edging out the Dust Bowl-era July 1936 by roughly a tenth of a degree, while Wyoming set its all-time hottest-month record, beating its previous July 2007 mark by nearly a full degree. Ocean temperatures outside the polar regions ran at record highs for the time of year from June 19 through the end of July, and Western Europe posted its hottest June–July stretch on record, with France logging its hottest month since 1900. Looking at the year as a whole, Carbon Brief’s running analysis estimates 2026 will finish around 1.47°C above pre-industrial levels, giving it roughly a 62 percent chance of ending as the second-warmest year on record (behind 2024) and a 19 percent chance of overtaking 2024 to become the warmest year ever measured. NOAA’s own calculation puts essentially no chance that 2026 becomes the single warmest year, while giving it a 61 percent chance of ranking second or third. Climate scientists monitoring the developing El Niño note its “largest effects” on global temperature typically arrive the year after its winter peak — meaning 2027 could see an even larger warming boost.
Drought Monitoring
In the United States, drought has been creeping back after a period of improvement. As of the August 4 U.S. Drought Monitor, 40.72 percent of the U.S. and Puerto Rico — and 48.54 percent of the Lower 48 states — were in drought, affecting an estimated 94.4 million people. Forty-five states had areas of at least moderate (D1) drought or worse. Drought coverage nationally expanded by 1.6 percent over the prior week and 2.9 percent over the prior month, a net worsening even as some regions improved: the Eastern U.S., Central Plains, Upper Midwest and Interior West all saw conditions ease, while the Northern and Southern Plains and the Northwest continued to deteriorate. Europe’s drought picture has been more severe and higher-stakes. Record heat and a rain-starved summer have pushed the Danube River to critically low levels, forcing Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant to progressively curtail output — on August 4 the facility came within, according to reporting, “millimetres” of its first-ever complete shutdown in 44 years of operation — while Romania’s Cernavodă plant took its Reactor 1 offline on July 28 and resorted to emergency measures, including controlled explosions and redirecting a partially sunk ship, to keep cooling water flowing to a unit that supplies roughly a fifth of the country’s electricity.
Climate Records
Western Europe’s summer has been one for the record books, and not in a good way. Copernicus measured a Western European average temperature of 20.74°C for June 2026, 3.06°C above the 1991–2020 baseline and the warmest June ever recorded for the region, edging out the previous record set only a year earlier, in June 2025. Copernicus strategic lead for climate Samantha Burgess said the month “underscored how profoundly the climate is” changing, reflecting “a climate system continuing to accumulate heat.” The human toll has been severe: reporting drawing on the World Health Organization, national health agencies and Spain’s AEMET put heat-related deaths across Europe at more than 10,000 in June alone, including over 5,000 excess deaths in Germany and roughly 4,700 combined across France, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands between June 20 and 28; WHO’s director-general separately cited more than 1,300 confirmed deaths since June 21. More than 300,000 people were displaced by heat, drought and fire impacts through the summer. Wildfires have burned at a pace well above recent years: the EU’s Forest Fire Information System had logged 457,459 hectares burned across 1,407 fires by July 29 — nearly a third more than the same period in 2025 — releasing an estimated 17.98 million tonnes of CO2. France’s Gironde fire near Bordeaux consumed roughly 42,000 hectares, the country’s largest forest fire since 1949 and forcing the evacuation of more than 220,000 people, while Greece saw more than 70 fires ignite in Attica and Boeotia in a single day, a Crete blaze on July 29 that displaced over 8,000 residents and tourists, and cumulative losses that have now burned an estimated 42 percent of Attica’s forested land over the past decade.
Taken together, this week’s indicators point to a climate system still absorbing the accumulated warmth of a strengthening El Niño layered atop a long-term warming trend, with impacts ranging from record ocean heat and shrinking Arctic ice to deadly, drought-fueled heat and fire across Europe. Forecasters expect the El Niño to continue strengthening into the fall and peak around November, meaning several more months of elevated global temperatures, marine heatwave risk and drought stress are likely before conditions begin to ease.
