Cyclone Arnab Aftermath: Landslide Kills Family of Three, Including Nine-Month-Old Baby, in India

By Paul Harrison | Orbis Weather | October 30, 2026

Heavy rainfall following Cyclone Arnab has triggered deadly landslides and widespread flooding across India’s Odisha state, claiming the lives of a young family and leaving communities struggling with damaged roads, destroyed homes and dangerous conditions.

🚨 Family of Three Killed as Hillside Collapses

Three members of the same family, including a nine-month-old infant, have died after a landslide buried their home in Dangesi village, located in the Raikia block of Kandhamal district, Odisha.

The victims were identified in several local reports as Achyuta Pradhan, his wife Anisha Pradhan and their infant child.

The landslide occurred on Thursday, October 29, when saturated soil and debris collapsed from a nearby hillside following prolonged rainfall associated with Cyclone Arnab.

Odisha Panchayati Raj Minister Rabi Narayan Naik confirmed the deaths. Rescue teams were dispatched to the village, where additional residents were initially feared missing. Odisha TV subsequently reported that two other trapped people had been rescued.

🌧️ Extraordinary Rainfall Across Odisha

Cyclone Arnab made landfall in Andhra Pradesh on October 28 as a very severe cyclonic storm before weakening inland. Although its strongest winds diminished, its rainfall continued to threaten communities across eastern India.

Rainfall measurements reported by officials illustrate the scale of the disaster.

Location

Reported rainfall

Patrapur, Ganjam

546 mm (21.5 in)

G. Udayagiri, Kandhamal

462.4 mm (18.2 in)

Raikia, Kandhamal

384.8 mm (15.1 in)

Sorada, Ganjam

375 mm (14.8 in)

Mohana, Gajapati

307.6 mm (12.1 in)

These figures were reported on October 29 and represent storm-period measurements, not necessarily a single uniform 24-hour period.

Such extreme rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems, saturate unstable slopes and produce destructive flash flooding.

🏘️ Homes Destroyed and Villages Cut Off

The devastation extends beyond the landslide in Dangesi.

An earlier report from Sambad English indicated that approximately 15 houses in the village had been washed away or severely affected. Authorities were still assessing the extent of the damage.

Across southern Odisha, floodwaters have disrupted transportation, damaged infrastructure and isolated communities.

Government figures reported on October 30 indicated that approximately 299 villages in Ganjam district and 711 villages in Gajapati district had been affected by flooding.

More than 59,000 people had reportedly been evacuated across affected areas of Odisha during the preceding 72 hours.

🚁 Emergency Rescue Operations Continue

Emergency response agencies have mobilized personnel and equipment to reach stranded residents.

The Indian Coast Guard began helicopter evacuations in flood-affected Ganjam district, while national and state disaster response teams worked alongside fire services.

Rescue efforts have been complicated by flooded rivers, unstable terrain, blocked highways and damaged bridges.

Sections of National Highway 157 near Kalinga Ghat and National Highway 326 have also suffered landslide damage or flooding, disrupting access between communities.

πŸ’” Government Announces Compensation

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed condolences following the deaths in Kandhamal.

The state government announced ex-gratia financial assistance of β‚Ή400,000 for the next of kin of each person killed in the landslide.

Officials have continued assessing damage and coordinating relief operations in affected districts.

⛰️ Why Heavy Rainfall Causes Landslides

Landslides are particularly dangerous in mountainous areas after prolonged tropical rainfall.

As rainwater penetrates the ground, it increases the weight of soil and raises water pressure within the slope. This reduces the friction and strength holding soil and rock in place.

Eventually, a hillside can fail suddenly, sending mud, vegetation, boulders and debris downhill.

The danger can persist after a cyclone weakens or moves away because the ground may remain saturated for days.

⚠️ Landslide Safety: Warning Signs to Watch For

Residents in hilly or mountainous regions affected by heavy rainfall should remain alert for:

  • ⚠️ New cracks appearing in roads, walls or surrounding soil.

  • 🌳 Trees, poles or fences beginning to tilt.

  • πŸ’§ Sudden changes in streams or water flowing from hillsides.

  • πŸͺ¨ Falling rocks or unusual rumbling sounds.

  • 🏠 Doors and windows suddenly becoming difficult to open because of ground movement.

Anyone observing these warning signs should move away from the threatened slope immediately if it is safe to do so, and follow instructions from local emergency authorities.

Never attempt to cross an active landslide, flooded roadway or unstable bridge.

🌏 Cyclone Arnab: A Reminder That Danger Continues After Landfall

The tragedy in Kandhamal highlights one of the most dangerous aspects of tropical cyclones: their impacts can continue long after the strongest winds have passed.

Flooding, landslides and damaged infrastructure can threaten communities far inland from the coast.

For Odisha, the immediate priorities remain locating missing residents, providing assistance to displaced families, restoring transportation links and assessing the stability of rainfall-affected hillsides.

The full extent of the disaster may take time to establish as emergency teams reach isolated communities.
