- Earthquakes: two magnitude 6.0 quakes, off northern Vanuatu and deep under the sea off central Japan, with no damage or tsunami flagged.
- Fires: quiet in the United States, at the lowest national preparedness level.
- Floods: no major new flood was confirmed; a landslide in Odisha, India, left 12 people missing.
- Volcanoes: no new eruption was reported in the window.
National weather services and local authorities issue the official warnings; follow them first.
Earthquakes
Two magnitude 6.0 earthquakes struck in the window, one deep beneath the sea off central Japan and one in a busy sequence off northern Vanuatu. USGS gave both a green PAGER alert, its lowest level, and flagged no tsunami for either.

What stands out
- Vanuatu: seven of the 16 magnitude 4.5+ events came from one patch of sea northwest of Port-Olry, building to the M6.0 at 11:47 UTC. The area lies offshore, and the depth of 10 km is a default USGS value often used for early solutions.
- Japan: the M6.0 off Shima was 352 km deep. Very deep quakes are felt over a wide area but rarely cause damage; GDACS estimated about 60,000 people in light shaking (intensity III).
- Panama: the shallow M5.2 near Bajo Corral had 29 “Did You Feel It?” reports on the USGS page; no damage was listed.
USGS recorded 16 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater and 219 of all sizes worldwide in the window (the ten largest are shown). Just outside the window, a shallow M6.4 struck southeast of Easter Island on October 29, per GDACS. Catalog: USGS M4.5+ query, searched at 12:22 UTC on November 1.
Storms
Two tropical cyclones are active, and only Cyclone Murasu threatens land. The National Hurricane Center reports no tropical cyclones in the Atlantic, Eastern Pacific or Central Pacific.
Storm | Latest advisory | Winds | Pressure | Where it is | Where it is going |

Cyclonic Storm Murasu (JTWC 04B) | IMD, 11:30 a.m. IST Nov 1 (06:00 UTC) | 40 mph (65 km/h), per JTWC at 00:00 UTC | 1007 mb (JTWC) | Southwest Bay of Bengal, 560 km (348 mi) ESE of Chennai | West-northwest at 14 mph (23 km/h), toward Andhra Pradesh |
Typhoon In-fa (30W) | JTWC warning 32, 09:00 UTC Oct 31 | 132 mph (213 km/h), gusts 161 mph (259 km/h) | 948 mb | 179 nautical miles (206 mi, 332 km) SSE of Iwo To | Slow drift, forecast to weaken and turn extratropical by Nov 5 |
The In-fa figures come from the latest JTWC warning available at writing and are more than a day old; newer warnings replace them.
Cyclone Murasu: India’s east coast
Figures are from India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletins quoted by ETV Bharat and IANS as of 11:30 a.m. IST on November 1. The newest IMD bulletin replaces them.
- Status: IMD says the deep depression “intensified into Cyclonic Storm ‘Murasu'” at 11:30 a.m. IST. It expects a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal around Monday morning, November 2.
- Landfall: IMD forecasts a crossing between Nellore and Narsapur “during midnight (2330 Hrs IST) of 2nd to early hours (0400 Hrs IST)” of November 3, per IANS.
- Wind: 100 to 110 km/h (62 to 68 mph), gusting to 120 km/h (75 mph), from the night of November 2 to the afternoon of November 3.

- Warnings: IMD has a yellow alert for coastal Andhra Pradesh. Fishing off the Andhra Pradesh coast is restricted from the morning of November 2 to the afternoon of November 4.
- Context: IANS notes this will be the second cyclonic storm to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast in less than a week, after Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab on October 28.
JTWC’s warning 1, issued at 03:00 UTC on November 1, gives a similar track. It peaks the storm at 58 mph (50 knots) and dissipates it over land by November 3.

Floods
The most serious new report is a landslide in Odisha, India, where 12 people are missing. The News Mill, citing ANI on November 1, says it struck Gidipabali village in Ganjam district after heavy rain linked to Cyclone Arnab. More than 140 personnel from NDRF, ODRAF, fire services and police are searching. Ganjam’s schools and colleges are closed until November 3.
Place | Situation | Toll | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
Ganjam, Odisha, India | New: landslide after heavy rain | 12 missing | The News Mill / ANI, Nov 1 |
Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, India | Long-running: Cyclone Arnab, landfall Oct 28; over 546 mm (21.5 in) of rain and about 300 villages cut off in Odisha | 7 dead, per IANS; an earlier Watchers report said 3 | |

In the Philippines, Mayon erupted on October 30 and its alert level was raised to 3, per The Watchers. Record high tides also flooded parts of the California coast this week, where Huntington Beach declared an emergency.

Frequently asked questions
Where will Cyclone Murasu make landfall? IMD forecasts a crossing of the Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur. It expects this between late on November 2 and the early hours of November 3, IST.
Was there a tsunami after the magnitude 6.0 earthquakes? No tsunami was flagged by USGS for either quake. The Japan event was very deep, which spreads out and weakens shaking at the surface.
Is Typhoon In-fa a threat to Japan’s main islands? JTWC’s latest available warning keeps it well south of the main islands, near Iwo To. It forecasts slow weakening and a turn to an extratropical storm by November 5.
Is the US wildfire season over? Activity is light, with the national preparedness level at 1. But 2026 has already burned well above the 10-year average area, and fires still burn in Washington, Oregon and Florida.
