Earth’s Hot Spots This Week: The 10 Hottest Places in the World

By Paul Harrison, Orbis Weather · Saturday, November 7, 2026 · Week of October 31-November 6, 2026

At a glance

The week’s hottest airport reading was 114.6°F (45.9°C) at Curtin RAAF Base near Derby, Western Australia, on Wednesday, November 4.

  • Northwest Australia held four of the top nine places, with a second cluster in the Sahel and a one-day spike in the Gran Chaco of Paraguay and Bolivia.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology’s official figure for Curtin is 45.9°C. Two non-airport stations were hotter that day: Mandora at 117.3°F (47.4°C) and Fitzroy Crossing at 116.8°F (47.1°C).
  • The list cut-off was 106°F (41°C). Six places tied at that mark, and at least nine more stations reached 104°F (40°C).
  • The Gulf and South Asia were absent: the hottest mid-week airport readings there were 102°F (39°C), at Dammam and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Port Blair in India.

National weather services issue heat warnings for their own countries. Check them before travel or outdoor work.

The 10 hottest places

Each station appears once, at its highest daily maximum from October 31 to November 6. Australian entries use the Bureau of Meteorology’s official tenth-of-a-degree figure; the rest are whole-degree airport values. A six-way tie at 10th takes the list to 15 places.

Where the heat was

Northwest Australia. Heat built through the week and peaked on Wednesday. Port Hedland rose from 32.3°C on Saturday to its Wednesday high, then stayed above 43°C through Friday. Curtin cooled to 39.9°C on Thursday. In the Pilbara, Marble Bar kept climbing to 46.5°C (115.7°F) on Friday. ABC News reported an extreme heatwave warning for the Kimberley and Pilbara for the rest of the week.

Northern Queensland. Mount Isa stayed between 39.3°C and 41.6°C every day from Sunday to Friday. ABC News reported a Bureau of Meteorology severe heatwave warning for parts of the Gulf Country, including Kowanyama and Weipa.

Gran Chaco. The heat lasted one day. Mariscal Estigarribia, Villa Montes and Camiri all peaked on Wednesday. By Thursday, Mariscal Estigarribia’s high had fallen to 81°F (27°C) and Villa Montes to 82°F (28°C).

The Sahel. The heat was steady rather than sharp. Niamey reached 41°C on five straight days, and Gao stayed between 40°C and 42°C on every day with data. Tahoua held 40°C to 41°C on all six days with data.

Southern Africa. Mpacha in northeast Namibia, Maun in Botswana and Tete in Mozambique each reached 40°C or more. Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) warned of a heatwave in Tete and Manica, with maximums up to 43°C, according to Club of Mozambique.

What to watch next week

  • Queensland, Australia: a Bureau of Meteorology heatwave warning issued on Friday, November 6, is valid to Monday, November 9. The Bureau issues all Australian heat warnings.
  • Mozambique: INAM’s heatwave warning for Tete and Manica runs to midnight on Sunday, November 8, with a sharp temperature drop expected in the south that day.
  • Northeast Brazil: Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) forecasts 40°C at Teresina on Sunday, November 8, and up to 39°C on Monday, November 9. INMET issues Brazil’s weather alerts.

About this list

The ranking uses daily maximums from airport weather reports (METARs), compiled by the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, for Saturday, October 31 to Friday, November 6, 2026. Hourly airport reports can miss the true peak and are rounded to whole degrees Celsius. Port Hedland’s reports, for example, peaked at 43°C on Wednesday against an official 44.3°C. Stations without airport reports, such as Mandora and Fitzroy Crossing, are not ranked. Arauca, Colombia, was excluded: its readings of 115°F to 122°F on most days from October 22 to November 1 sit far above its neighbors.

Term

Meaning

Daily maximum

The highest temperature recorded at a station in one day

Synoptic station

Frequently asked questions

Where was the hottest place on Earth this week? Among airport reports, Curtin RAAF Base near Derby, Western Australia, led on Wednesday. Official Bureau of Meteorology figures were higher that day at Mandora and Fitzroy Crossing, two stations without airport reports.

Why does Earthweek give a different figure? Earthweek’s column for the week ending November 6 gives “115°F (46°C) at the Mandora Station cattle ranch in Western Australia.” It draws on World Meteorological Organization synoptic stations, which report at fixed hours. This list uses airport reports, which do not cover Mandora.

Was the Western Australia heat a record? Sources disagree. Weatherzone said “this heat is not breaking records,” while Yahoo News Australia called Fitzroy Crossing’s 45.1°C on Tuesday “a historic spring record.” Weatherzone noted it was Australia’s first 45°C reading in nine months.

How does this week compare with last week? Earthweek’s hottest reading rose from 112°F (44°C) at Podor, Senegal, in the week ending October 30 to 115°F (46°C) this week. The hottest region moved from West Africa to northwest Australia.
