Europe’s Cold Spots This Week: The 10 Coldest Places in Europe
By Paul Harrison, Orbis Weather
Week covered: Monday, October 26 to Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Europe’s coldest reading this week was 4°F (−15.3°C) at Brunnenkogel, an automatic station in Austria’s Ötztal Alps, on Sunday, November 1. GeoSphere Austria’s 10-minute data show the low reached between 16:40 and 17:20 UTC, and Meteociel’s station page records the same figure.
Sunday was the coldest day for seven of the ten places on the list; the other three set their lows on Monday, October 26. All ten are high mountain stations: nine in the Alps of Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and Lomnický štít in Slovakia. Lowland northern Europe and European Russia stayed mild for late October.
The 10 coldest places
Each place is ranked by its lowest observed daily minimum during the week; places with equal readings share a rank.
Rank | Place | Elevation | Lowest temperature | Date | Station type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Brunnenkogel, Ötztal Alps, Austria | 11,276 ft (3,437 m) | 4°F (−15.3°C) | Sun, Nov 1 | GeoSphere Austria automatic station |

4 | Corvatsch, Switzerland | 10,876 ft (3,315 m) | 10°F (−12.0°C) | Sun, Nov 1 | MeteoSwiss mountain station |
5 | Sonnblick, Austria | 10,200 ft (3,109 m) | 12°F (−11.3°C) | Sun, Nov 1 | GeoSphere Austria mountain station |
6 | Valluga, Austria | 9,203 ft (2,805 m) | 12°F (−10.9°C) | Sun, Nov 1 | GeoSphere Austria automatic station |

8= | Lomnický štít, Slovakia | 8,638 ft (2,633 m) | 15°F (−9.6°C) | Sun, Nov 1 | SHMÚ mountain station |
10 | Piz Martegnas, Switzerland | 8,763 ft (2,671 m) | 16°F (−8.8°C) | Sun, Nov 1 | MeteoSwiss mountain station |
Weissfluhjoch, Switzerland, just missed the list at 17°F (−8.6°C) on November 1.
Where the cold showed up
The Alps. The highest summits were coldest at both ends of the week, with milder nights in between. Säntis in Switzerland, for example, recorded a minimum of 34°F (1.0°C) on October 28. Among inhabited valleys, Segl-Maria in Switzerland, at 5,919 ft (1,804 m), dropped to 22°F (−5.6°C) on November 1. Obergurgl in Austria reached 24°F (−4.5°C) on October 31, and Davos 27°F (−2.8°C) on both October 26 and 31.
Eastern European mountains. Peaks further east were coldest early in the week. Cherni Vrah in Bulgaria fell to 18°F (−7.8°C) and Vârful Omu in Romania to 20°F (−6.5°C), both on October 27. Kasprowy Wierch in Poland reached 21°F (−6.1°C) the same day.
Norway and Finland. Norway’s high mountains led Scandinavia: Juvflye, at 6,073 ft (1,851 m), recorded 19°F (−7.0°C) on October 27, and nearby Juvvasshøe 20°F (−6.8°C). The coldest low-lying place found was Karasjok, at 430 ft (131 m), with 20°F (−6.6°C) on November 1. In northern Finland, Kevo and Sodankylä stayed above 41°F (5°C) on October 26 and 27, then dipped below freezing on October 30 and 31. Kevo bottomed out at 24°F (−4.2°C) on November 1, and Karesuando in northern Sweden at 25°F (−4.1°C) on October 31.
The Arctic. No Arctic island station checked fell below 23°F (−4.8°C), the low at Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard on November 1. Krenkel on Franz Josef Land reached 26°F (−3.6°C) on October 26. Bjørnøya, Hopen and Jan Mayen stayed above freezing all week, and Malye Karmakuly on Novaya Zemlya never dropped below 36°F (2.0°C).
European Russia. The coldest readings came from the Ural foothills, not the north. Krasnoufimsk in Sverdlovsk region recorded 19°F (−7.3°C) on October 28, and Sterlitamak in Bashkortostan 19°F (−7.2°C) on October 31. Far northern stations stayed near or above freezing: Vorkuta’s lowest was 32°F (−0.2°C), Naryan-Mar’s 35°F (1.7°C) and Arkhangelsk’s 37°F (2.9°C).
About this list
The list uses observed daily minimum temperatures from October 26 to November 1, 2026. Readings come from GeoSphere Austria’s data hub (daily and 10-minute data), Germany’s DWD via WetterKontor, Meteociel’s pages of synoptic reports from national weather services, MET Norway via Yr, SMHI open data, and Roshydromet data via Pogoda i Klimat. Daily windows differ: Meteociel uses 18:00 to 18:00 UTC, GeoSphere a calendar day, and Pogoda i Klimat a meteorological day starting at 15:00 or 18:00 UTC. For Zugspitze, DWD’s dated series was used. Europe here means the continent west of the Ural Mountains and Ural River, plus Svalbard, Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya and Iceland.
Lomnický štít has no minimum for October 29, and Svalbard Airport none for October 30. No data were available for Iceland or for several Russian stations, including Kirov, Kotlas, Mezen and Ust-Tsilma. One reading was left out: Ufa’s 19°F (−7.0°C) on November 1, because the station’s run of daily minima looked inconsistent with its three-hourly reports. All figures are preliminary and can be revised.
Frequently asked questions
Why are all ten places mountain stations? Air temperature usually falls with height, and every station on the list sits above 8,600 ft (2,600 m). Away from the peaks, the coldest places this week were in Norway’s mountains and the Ural foothills.
Was it milder than usual? In Finland and south-eastern Russia, national services said so. The Finnish Meteorological Institute, cited by Yle on November 2, said October was 2 to 4°C warmer than the 1991–2020 average nationally. Russia’s Hydrometcentre said on October 29 that warm, mostly clear weather would continue in south-eastern European Russia, 3 to 7°C above average.
Why can the same station show different dates in different sources? Services close their daily minimum at different times. Meteociel’s day runs from 18:00 to 18:00 UTC, so a low on Sunday evening can count toward Monday. For Zugspitze, Meteociel’s series ran a day later than DWD’s from October 28, so DWD’s dates are used here.
What are forecasters expecting this week? On November 2, Russia’s Hydrometcentre said a north-westerly flow of cold air was setting in over European Russia, with precipitation mainly as wet snow. On November 1, Foreca forecast 23°F to 30°F (−5°C to −1°C) in northern Lapland on Monday, November 2, and colder Arctic air on November 5 and 6. On November 3, Finland had yellow snow-ice traffic warnings for the night, but no low-temperature warnings appeared in Meteoalarm’s feeds for Austria, Switzerland, Norway or Finland.
