How this list is made
The list ranks each place by its single hottest daily maximum from Friday, October 16, to Thursday, October 22, 2026. Readings come from Iowa Environmental Mesonet daily summaries of airport weather reports (METARs) in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Bulgaria, Albania, North Macedonia and Turkey. Each place appears once, and stations in the same city are merged. Airport reports are hourly and rounded to whole degrees Celsius, so true daily highs may be slightly higher; all figures are preliminary. The list covers Europe including Cyprus, and leaves out the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores and Asian Turkey. For comparison, the Canary Islands peaked at 84.2°F (29.0°C) and Adana, in southern Turkey, at 87.8°F (31.0°C). One reading was excluded: an 84.2°F report at Kars, Turkey, on October 22 was a single-hour spike between readings of 57.2°F and 50.0°F.
