🌴 Atlantic Tropics Update — August 19, 2026

The Atlantic Basin is unusually quiet this morning, with no active tropical cyclones and no areas currently expected to develop into a tropical depression or storm during the next seven days.

The National Hurricane Center’s latest Tropical Weather Outlook says tropical cyclone formation is not expected across the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea or Gulf of America through August 26. (National Hurricane Center)

🌀 Atlantic Basin

Current activity: None
7-day development potential: 🟢 Low — no development expected
Active watches/warnings: None

There are currently no tropical storms or hurricanes anywhere in the Atlantic Basin. (National Hurricane Center)

🌊 Tropical Atlantic

A tropical wave is moving westward across the eastern Atlantic, but the latest NHC discussion does not indicate significant development from the wave at this time. (National Hurricane Center)

Normally, late August marks the beginning of the Atlantic’s more active period as the basin approaches the climatological peak of hurricane season. This year, however, conditions remain hostile to tropical development.

🏝️ Caribbean & Gulf of America

The Caribbean Sea and Gulf of America are quiet, with no tropical cyclone formation expected during the next seven days. (National Hurricane Center)

For Southwest Florida, that means there is currently no tropical system posing a direct threat to the Gulf Coast or Florida.

🌡️ Why is the Atlantic so quiet?

One of the major factors is the developing El Niño pattern in the Pacific. El Niño generally increases upper-level winds over the Atlantic, producing greater vertical wind shear, which can disrupt developing tropical systems.

NOAA’s August outlook continues to favor a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season, with NOAA maintaining a 75% probability of below-normal activity. (NOAA)

📅 Looking ahead

Even with today’s quiet conditions, August 19 is still early in the most active part of hurricane season. Conditions can change quickly, particularly as we move toward late August and September.

Atlantic Tropics Status: 🟢 LOW ACTIVITY

No storms. No areas of concern. No tropical development expected over the next 7 days.

For Marco Island, Naples and Southwest Florida, there is no tropical threat at this time. (National Hurricane Center)
